Orange Balloon

One day Mickey went to a party and at the party he was given a balloon. It was a lovely bright orange balloon.

For the rest of the day that orange balloon was Mickey’s best friend, they went everywhere together. They went for car rides and to the park; they even went to the grocery store.

The orange balloon had a long green ribbon tied around its end. Mickey walked holding that ribbon in his hand and he didn’t want it tied around his wrist for safe keeping. In the house the ribbon came off and he couldn’t reach the balloon as it had floated up to the ceiling. Mickey’s mom got the balloon down and retied the ribbon.

So wherever he walked the balloon trailed behind him like a little floating puppy, not that puppies float but still if followed.

Mickey talked to the balloon and he sang the balloon songs. He napped with the balloon floating over his head and when he woke he watched a little TV with the balloon. They had a wonderful day.

Later when Mickey saw his older brother tie his balloon to his bike, Mickey wanted to do the same thing. So off he went to the back yard and before he knew it his balloon was floating away because it slipped out of his hand when he was trying to tie it to his bike.

Mickey watched the balloon float up into the sky. It went up and up and up. The higher it went the smaller it got. Pretty soon it was only a small dark spot in the white clouds above. His balloon was gone.

Mickey screamed and he screamed but the balloon wouldn’t come back. His lower lip hung quite low and he went to his mother. With a hug and a kiss she was waiting but this did not stop Mickey from thinking about his beloved orange balloon. He made a plan.

His mother took him in the van, up and up and up they went to the top of the hill and Mickey reached and reached and reached but he couldn’t get the balloon.

Next he got his dad and they went up in a big balloon and they went up and up and up and Mickey reached and reached and reached but he could not get that orange balloon.

So a helicopter would have to do. Mom and Dad both were with him now. They went up and up and up and Mickey reached and reached and reached but he couldn’t get the balloon.

An airplane would do the job so off they went, up and up and up and Mickey reached and reached and reached but he could not get that orange balloon.

What next could he try, a rocket ship, this time his dad and mom and his brother were all with him and they went up into the sky with that rocket ship. Up and up and up they went. And Mickey reached and reached and reached but still he could not get that orange balloon.

Mickey was sad when he came home. He talked about his balloon right up until bed time and that balloon was even in his dreams. He reached for it in his sleep. That lovely bright orange balloon was gone.

The next day Mickey still missed his balloon and he thought of what a great balloon it was and he’d miss that balloon. He was sad all day and wouldn’t play.

The doorbell rang and Mickey’s mom answered the door. Then she called Mickey over because it was for him and when he came to the door there was a bright orange balloon waiting for him.

Mickey squealed in delight. His bright orange balloon with the green ribbon came back to him and he was happy. He held on tight to the green ribbon because he didn’t want to go on another adventure like he had the day before because he was still quite tired from all that up and up and up.
